FAQ

Common questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about Russian visas.

The main Russian visa categories are: business visa (for commercial activities, meetings and negotiations), private visa (based on a personal invitation from a Russian national or permanent resident), work visa (required for employment in Russia), humanitarian visa (for cultural, educational, scientific or charitable activities), student visa (for enrolment at accredited Russian institutions), and transit visa. The correct category depends on the actual purpose of your visit — using the wrong category can result in a refusal or complications on arrival. We identify the right category for your specific situation.
Most Russian visas require an invitation issued by a Russian party. For business visas, invitations are typically issued by accredited Russian companies. For private visas, invitations are issued by Russian nationals or permanent residents through their local migration office. Hotels and tourist facilities can also issue invitations for tourism purposes in certain cases. The type of invitation required, its format and content depend on the visa category. We advise on what type of invitation is appropriate and how the process works.
Foreign nationals in Russia are required to be registered at their place of stay within a set period of their arrival. The obligation to complete registration rests with the receiving party — the hotel, employer, host or organisation responsible for the foreign national's accommodation. Private individuals hosting foreign guests are also required to register them. Failure to comply with registration requirements is an administrative violation and can have consequences for the foreign national's ability to obtain future visas or permits. We explain the requirements and timelines in full.
Visa extension within Russia is possible in a limited number of circumstances — for example, where a documented reason prevents the person from leaving before the visa expires. Extensions are handled through the migration authorities. In general, Russian visas are not routinely extendable, and planning the correct visa duration at the outset is important. We advise on whether extension is an option in a specific situation and on the required procedure.
Yes — Russia has visa-free agreements with a number of countries, including most CIS member states and several other countries with bilateral arrangements. The conditions of these agreements vary: some permit visa-free entry for limited periods, others for longer stays. Even where visa-free entry applies, registration requirements and other obligations still apply. We advise on the specific conditions that apply to each nationality and purpose of travel.
In some circumstances it is possible to change the basis of stay after arrival — for example, if a foreign national enters on a business visa and subsequently takes up employment, a work visa will be required. However, this cannot be done simply by declaring a different purpose: the appropriate documentation and often a new visa or permit must be obtained. We advise on whether a change of status is possible in a given situation and on the correct procedure.
